Virtual Private Network (VPN) connections provide a convenient way for staff to access internal network resources remotely over the network. It also provides a mechanism for staff and vendors to provide support for applications and software remotely. Like any remote connection, they must be carefully managed and secured.
From the policy: Many organizations rely on a virtual private network (VPN) to accommodate remote and mobile employees, providing secure access to internal networks, systems, and data. Policy Purpose. The purpose of this policy is to provide guidelines for VPN connections to Wright State University’s internal network. Wright State's VPN service is designed to provide secure/encrypted access to network resources on the Wright State Network. The VPN must be configured to automatically disconnect after [variable: Time period] of inactivity. The VPN must be configured so that, when the user is connected via the VPN to the corporate network, all network traffic to and from the PC will be forced through the VPN tunnel. All other traffic will be dropped.
This policy applies to remote access connections used to do work on behalf of , including reading or sending email and viewing intranet web resources. Remote access implementations that are covered by this policy include, but are not limited to, dial-in modems, frame relay, ISDN, DSL, VPN, SSH, and cable modems, etc.
